Part 1 · The car check

Turn signals

Front and rear, left and right. Show the examiner that each one works.

Brake lights

Press the brake pedal so the examiner can see that both brake lights come on.

Horn

It has to work and be loud enough to be heard from a distance. A bicycle horn does not count.

Find the wiper control and the front defroster button. In bad weather they must work or the test is rescheduled.

Tires

In California each tire needs at least 1/32 inch of tread in any two neighboring grooves. Bald tires fail.

Windshield and mirrors

A clear, unobstructed view for you and the examiner, and at least two mirrors, one of them outside on the left.

Seat belts

Yours and the examiner’s must work, and everyone in the car wears one.

Part 2 · Signals

Tell others what you will do

Signal at least 100 feet before a turn, and at least five seconds (about 400 feet) before a freeway lane change. Tap the brakes early so the brake lights warn the driver behind you. If a light fails, the arm signals are your backup, and the examiner can ask you to show them.

Avisa con la direccional al menos 100 pies antes de una vuelta, y al menos cinco segundos (unos 400 pies) antes de cambiar de carril en autopista. Left turn — Left arm straight out, flat hand.
